Shopify Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026, and any discount, shipping or payment logic they handled must be rebuilt as Shopify Functions. Editing and publishing Scripts had already ended on April 15, 2026, and checkout.liquid customizations are no longer supported. Functions are written in Rust or JavaScript, compiled to WebAssembly, run inside Shopify's infrastructure and work with every checkout upgrade, including one-page checkout. This applies to every store whose promotions, shipping rates or payment rules depended on Scripts.
Shopify has retired Shopify Scripts in favor of a more powerful and performant replacement: Shopify Functions. If your store relied on Scripts for checkout customizations such as discounts, payment rules or shipping logic, that logic no longer runs and needs to be rebuilt as Functions.
What Changed?
Shopify Scripts were retired on June 30, 2026. Editing and publishing Scripts had already ended on April 15, 2026. Since June 30:
- The Script Editor is gone, and
checkout.liquidcustomizations are no longer supported. - Existing Scripts no longer run at checkout.
- All checkout customizations must be built using Shopify Functions.
This change is tied to Shopify’s broader shift toward Checkout Extensibility, which allows merchants to customize checkout in a more secure and performant way while keeping their stores eligible for Shopify’s fastest checkout upgrades.
If your store still relied on Scripts on June 30, any discount, shipping or payment logic they handled stopped applying that day. Check your promotions, shipping rates and payment options, and rebuild whatever is missing as Functions.

The main differences are language, where the code runs and compatibility: Scripts were Ruby in the Script Editor and did not work in one-page checkout; Functions are Rust or JavaScript compiled to WebAssembly and run inside Shopify's own infrastructure.
