What’s the difference between Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions?
Checkout Extensibility is how you customize the checkout UI (add fields, custom blocks, dynamic content) using Shopify’s app-based architecture, replacing the old Checkout.liquid model that’s being deprecated in 2026. Shopify Functions is how you customize Shopify’s backend logic: discounts, shipping rates, payment customizations, cart transformations, with custom code that runs server-side. Most enterprise builds need both: Functions for the logic, Extensibility for the UI.
