Shopify Plus Cost in 2026: What You Actually Pay

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term or $2,500 on a one-year term. That figure is the easy part. What actually determines your cost is payment processing, expansion stores, apps and the build, and this is what each one adds.

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term or $2,500 per month on a one-year term. That is the number Shopify publishes, and it is also the number that tells you the least about what the platform will actually cost your business.

The platform fee is usually the smaller half of the bill. What moves the total is how you take payments, how many stores you run, how much custom development your requirements need, and which apps you end up paying for every month.

TL;DR: Budget the platform fee, the payment stack, and the build separately. The platform fee is predictable and public. The payment stack depends on whether Shopify Payments works for you. The build is the genuinely variable part, and it is the one worth scoping properly before you sign anything.

1. The Base Platform Fee

From Shopify's Plus pricing page, current as of September 2026:

TermMonthly platform feeAnnualized
3-year term$2,300$27,600
1-year term$2,500$30,000

The three-year commitment saves $200 per month, or $7,200 across the term. That is a real saving, but it is also a three-year commitment on a platform decision, so it is worth being confident in the platform fit first. If you are still weighing that, our comparison of Shopify Plus vs BigCommerce Enterprise covers where each one wins.

2. The Variable Fee, and Why Nobody Can Quote It Exactly

Shopify's pricing page says that "more complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model." It does not publish the threshold, the percentage, or the cap.

This matters, because most articles about Shopify Plus pricing state these figures as fact. What is consistently reported across industry sources is:

  • The switch happens at roughly $800,000 in monthly sales, around $9.6M annually.
  • The variable rate is approximately 0.35% of sales on a three-year term, or 0.40% on a one-year term.
  • It is capped near $40,000 per month.

Those numbers are widely repeated and broadly reliable for planning, but they are not published by Shopify and your contract is negotiated. Do not build a three-year model on a number you read in a blog post, including this one. Ask Shopify for your specific terms in writing.

A useful sanity check: at $800,000 monthly sales, a 0.35% variable fee is $2,800 per month, which is roughly where the flat fee sits anyway. The variable model only becomes materially more expensive well above the threshold, and the cap limits the damage at the top end.

3. Payment Processing: The Fee That Decides Platforms

This is where Shopify Plus costs diverge most sharply between businesses, and it is the part most budgets get wrong.

If you use Shopify Payments: Plus carries Shopify's lowest card rates, and Shopify waives third-party transaction fees globally. For most direct-to-consumer businesses this is the cheapest path and the fee question mostly disappears.

If you use a different primary processor: Shopify charges 0.20% per transaction on top of your processor's own fees, which Shopify describes as covering security and compliance costs.

That 0.20% sounds small until you annualize it:

Annual GMVCost of the 0.20% third-party fee
$5,000,000$10,000 per year
$15,000,000$30,000 per year
$30,000,000$60,000 per year
$50,000,000$100,000 per year

At the top of that table the fee exceeds the platform fee itself. If your business depends on negotiated processor rates, a regional acquirer, a high-risk specialist, or your own financing flow, this line is the single biggest factor in your Shopify Plus cost, and it is the most common reason we see a business land on a different platform instead.

4. Expansion Stores

Your main store and nine expansion stores are included in the platform fee. Beyond that, additional stores cost $300 per month each.

Nine is generous, and most mid-market businesses never reach it. Where it matters is multi-brand groups and heavily regionalized operations. Before adding stores, it is worth checking whether Shopify Markets covers the requirement instead, since one localized store is usually cheaper to run and far cheaper to maintain than several near-duplicates.

5. What the Platform Fee Does Not Include

This is the part that separates a realistic budget from an optimistic one.

Cost areaWhat drives it
Theme and storefront buildWhether you start from a premium theme or build custom, and how much of the design is bespoke.
AppsSubscriptions compound quickly. Subscriptions, reviews, search, loyalty, and B2B extensions each carry a monthly fee.
IntegrationsERP, PIM, OMS, CRM and WMS connections. Off-the-shelf connectors are cheaper up front; custom middleware costs more but fits.
Custom developmentCheckout extensions, Shopify Functions, private apps, anything your business does that the platform does not do natively.
MigrationData mapping, URL and redirect work, testing, and cutover if you are replatforming.
Ongoing supportRetainer or in-house capacity for changes, monitoring and incidents after launch.

Published estimates commonly put the real all-in monthly cost of running Shopify Plus somewhere between $5,000 and $25,000. That range is wide because it is driven almost entirely by requirements rather than by the plan. A clean direct-to-consumer store on a well-built theme sits at the bottom. An ERP-connected B2B operation with custom checkout logic sits at the top.

If your costs will be integration-heavy, that scoping is worth doing before you commit. Our Shopify app and API integration work normally begins with exactly that exercise, and our Shopify B2B implementation guide walks through the requirements process that drives the number.

6. When the Upgrade From Advanced Pays for Itself

Shopify Advanced is $399 per month. Plus is $2,300. That is roughly a $1,900 monthly step, about $22,800 a year, and the honest answer is that plenty of businesses do not need to take it.

The upgrade earns its keep when you need at least one of:

  • Checkout customization. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, plus the branding API, are Plus capabilities.
  • B2B at depth. Core B2B is now on every plan, but unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, deposits and partial payments, and a dedicated B2B storefront are Plus.
  • Expansion stores for genuinely separate brands or regions.
  • Higher API limits, which matters for high-frequency ERP synchronization.
  • Shopify Functions for server-side discount, payment and delivery logic.

The cleanest way to justify it is conversion math rather than feature lists. At a store doing $500,000 per month, a 0.5% improvement in checkout conversion is worth about $2,500 per month, which covers the upgrade on its own. If you cannot identify where the gain comes from, the upgrade is probably premature. We covered the feature-by-feature split in Shopify Advanced vs Shopify Plus.

7. How to Bring the Number Down

  • Use Shopify Payments if it genuinely works for you. It removes the 0.20% third-party fee and gets you the lowest card rates on the platform. This is the largest single lever for most businesses.
  • Audit the app stack before launch, not after. App subscriptions are the quietest recurring cost, and a surprising share of them duplicate each other or replace something the theme could do.
  • Take the three-year term only if the platform decision is settled. $7,200 saved is not worth being locked into the wrong platform.
  • Scope integrations against data ownership first. Deciding which system owns which field before choosing a connector avoids the most expensive category of rework.
  • Use Markets before expansion stores where a localized single store would serve the requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify Plus cost per month?

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term or $2,500 per month on a one-year term, according to Shopify's own pricing page. Higher-volume businesses move to a variable platform fee instead of the flat rate. The platform fee is only part of total cost; payment processing, apps, development and integrations usually add more.

At what revenue does Shopify Plus switch to variable pricing?

Shopify states that higher-volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, but it does not publish the threshold or the rate. Industry reporting consistently puts the switch at roughly $800,000 in monthly sales, with a fee around 0.35% to 0.40% of sales and a cap near $40,000 per month. Treat those as reported figures and confirm your own numbers with Shopify before modelling them.

Does Shopify Plus charge transaction fees?

If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify waives third-party transaction fees globally and Plus carries Shopify's lowest card rates. If you use a different primary processor, Shopify charges 0.20% per transaction on top of whatever your processor charges, which Shopify describes as covering security and compliance costs.

How many stores are included with Shopify Plus?

Your main store plus nine expansion stores are included in the monthly platform fee. Additional stores beyond that cost $300 per month each.

What is the real total cost of running Shopify Plus?

The platform fee is usually the smaller half. Add payment processing, app subscriptions, agency or in-house development, integration and middleware work, and ongoing support. Published estimates commonly put all-in monthly cost somewhere between $5,000 and $25,000 depending on revenue and complexity, which is a wide range because it is driven by your requirements rather than the plan.

Is Shopify Plus worth it compared to Shopify Advanced?

The upgrade from Advanced at $399 per month to Plus is roughly a $1,900 monthly step. It pays for itself when you need checkout customization, B2B at depth, expansion stores, higher API limits, or the conversion gains that come with them. At a $500,000 per month store, a 0.5% checkout conversion improvement is worth about $2,500 per month on its own.
