Shopify POS Pro costs $89 a month per location, billed yearly, on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, and you only pay for the stores that need it. Shopify Plus includes POS Pro for the first 20 locations, up to 200 with Shopify Payments. Basic, Grow and Advanced allow only 10 inventory locations, so a chain of about ten stores and a warehouse has to move to Plus anyway; on POS Pro savings alone, Plus only pays off at about 23 stores. For most chains the card rate matters more than the subscription: each 0.1 percentage point on $1 million of in-store sales is $1,000 a year.
"How much is Shopify POS?" has two honest answers. For one shop with a couple of staff, the point of sale comes with the Shopify plan you already pay for. For a retailer with several stores, the answer is a monthly bill that grows with every location, and a plan choice that turns on two numbers most comparison pages leave out: how many locations each plan allows, and what each plan charges per card payment.
This guide uses Shopify's published US pricing as of October 2026. Plan prices are quoted on yearly billing, because that is how POS Pro is billed.
How Much Does Shopify POS Pro Cost?
POS Pro costs $89 a month for each location, billed yearly, on top of your Shopify plan. Shopify Plus includes it for the first 20 locations, and up to 200 locations when you use Shopify Payments.
Every paid Shopify plan includes a basic version of the point of sale at no extra cost. It takes card payments with a phone or tablet and a Shopify card reader, keeps simple customer profiles and handles returns at the store where the item was bought. POS Pro is what a store with staff, stock to manage and customers who shop across locations usually needs:
| Included with every plan | POS Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Staff on the POS | Limited | Unlimited |
| Staff roles and permissions | No | Yes |
| Customer profiles | Simple | Rich |
| Returns and exchanges | At the store of purchase | At any location |
| Inventory management | No | Yes |
| Retail reports | Shopify's standard reports | Professional retail reports |
| Price | Included | $89 a month per location, billed yearly |
Staff permissions are the feature most stores feel first. Without them, anyone logged in to the register can issue a refund or a discount. With them, a sales associate can sell and a manager approves the rest.
Do You Need POS Pro at Every Location?
No. POS Pro is bought per location, so a chain can run it in its full stores and leave a pop-up, a market stall or a one-person counter on the included features. The trade-off is in the table above: a location without POS Pro cannot take back an item bought at another store, and its staff have no roles or permissions. If customers return things across stores, every store that accepts returns needs POS Pro.
What a Chain of Stores Pays
Here is the monthly subscription cost on each plan, with POS Pro at every store, on yearly billing:
| Stores on POS Pro | Grow ($79) + POS Pro | Advanced ($299) + POS Pro | Plus (from $2,300) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $168 | $388 | $2,300 |
| 3 | $346 | $566 | $2,300 |
| 5 | $524 | $744 | $2,300 |
| 9 | $880 | $1,100 | $2,300 |
| 10 or more stores plus a warehouse | Over the location limit | Over the location limit | $2,300, POS Pro included to 20 stores |
The Basic plan at $29 is left out because it includes no additional staff accounts, which rules it out for most chains. Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term and $2,500 on a one-year term, and higher-volume businesses pay a variable fee instead; our guide to what Shopify Plus actually costs covers that in detail.
The 10-Location Limit
Basic, Grow and Advanced each allow 10 inventory locations. Plus allows 200. Every place you manage stock in Shopify counts, so a warehouse takes one of the ten as well as each store.
This, not POS Pro, is what usually moves a chain to Plus. On subscription cost alone, Advanced plus POS Pro only overtakes Plus at about 23 stores ($299 + 23 × $89 = $2,346). But a retailer with nine stores and a warehouse has already used all ten locations on Advanced. The eleventh location means Plus, whatever the POS math says.
If you are at six or seven stores and planning to open more, plan the move to Plus with the growth plan, not when the limit stops you from adding a location.
Card Fees Usually Matter More Than POS Pro
Each step up in plan lowers the in-person card rate by 0.1 percentage point. The fixed fee stays at 10¢ a payment on every plan:
| Plan | In-person card rate with Shopify Payments |
|---|---|
| Basic | 2.6% + 10¢ |
| Grow | 2.5% + 10¢ |
| Advanced | 2.4% + 10¢ |
| Plus | 2.3% + 10¢ |
Each 0.1 percentage point is $1,000 a year on every $1 million of in-store card sales. A five-store chain doing $2 million a year in store saves about $2,000 a year by moving from Grow to Advanced, against $2,640 a year more in subscription ($220 a month). At $3 million in store, the lower rate pays for the upgrade. Run the numbers with your own card volume before choosing a plan on subscription price.
When Shopify Plus Makes Sense for a Retail Chain
- You need more than 10 locations, counting warehouses, or will within the next year.
- Your in-store card volume is high enough that the lower rate covers a meaningful part of the fee.
- You sell wholesale as well as retail. Shopify's core B2B tools are on every plan, but more advanced B2B features are Plus only.
- You run more than 20 stores, where POS Pro on Plus saves real money: up to 200 locations are covered with Shopify Payments.
If none of those apply, Grow or Advanced with POS Pro where you need it is usually the cheaper and simpler setup.
Costs That Are Not on the Price List
- Hardware. Each counter needs a phone or tablet and a Shopify card reader; printers, scanners and cash drawers are optional. These are one-time purchases from Shopify's hardware store.
- Apps. Loyalty programs, and reorder suggestions or forecasting since Shopify retired its Stocky inventory app on August 31, 2026, come from third-party apps with their own monthly fees.
- Payment processing outside Shopify Payments. On Plus, using another processor adds 0.20% per transaction.
- Moving your data. Products, customers, stock at each location, gift cards and store credit have to come across from your current system. Our Shopify POS setup and migration service starts at $2,500.
