Native capability

What BigCommerce gives you out of the box.

Knowing where the platform stops is most of the value of hiring someone who has done this before. BigCommerce covers more B2B ground natively than people expect, and a lot of projects waste budget rebuilding things that already ship.

Customer groups

Segment buyers into groups with their own catalog visibility, pricing, and discount rules without custom code.

Price lists

Customer-specific and volume-based pricing assigned per group or per company, managed in the admin rather than in a spreadsheet.

Company accounts

Multiple buyers under one company, each with roles and ordering permissions, via B2B Edition.

Quoting & payment terms

Request-a-quote workflows and invoice or net-terms payment options for corporate buyers.

Bulk & reorder flows

Bulk order pads, saved lists, and reorder from history, which is what B2B buyers actually use the storefront for.

Gated catalogs

Login-required storefronts and per-group product visibility for brands that do not show wholesale pricing publicly.

The custom layer

What we build on top of it.

The native features handle the common cases. The work we get hired for is everything downstream of that: the pricing logic that does not fit a price list, the approval chain that has to match how the customer's procurement actually works, the punchout connection to a buyer's procurement system, and the ERP sync that has to be right or the whole thing is worthless.

In practice, most B2B projects come down to one question: where does the truth live? If pricing, inventory, and credit terms live in your ERP, then the storefront is a presentation layer and the integration is the project. We scope it that way from the start rather than discovering it in week nine.

We also build the operational pieces that get skipped: rep-assisted ordering, customer-specific catalogs that sales can adjust, and admin tooling so your team can service accounts without engineering involvement.

The honest comparison

BigCommerce or Shopify for B2B?

We build on both, so here is the version without a sales agenda. BigCommerce has historically been strong on native B2B: customer groups, price lists, and gated catalogs have been in the platform for years, and multi-storefront is included rather than an upsell. If your B2B model is pricing-heavy and catalog-heavy, it fits well.

Shopify has closed a lot of that gap. Native B2B (Companies, catalogs, payment terms) is now available across paid plans, and the app and developer ecosystem is larger. If you run significant direct-to-consumer alongside B2B and want one system for both, that is a real argument.

The deciding factors are usually less exciting than the feature grids suggest. The transaction-fee math matters most at B2B volumes: Shopify takes a percentage of sales on non-Shopify-Payments transactions while BigCommerce does not, and on large wholesale order values that gap compounds fast. After that it is your integration footprint, whether you need multi-storefront, whether you need to control the checkout or payment flow yourself, and which platform your team can actually operate. We wrote a longer comparison of Shopify B2B vs BigCommerce B2B if you want the detail.

If you are weighing the platforms and want a recommendation for your specific situation, that is a conversation we are happy to have before you have signed anything.

Who it's for

The B2B brands we work with.

Distributors, manufacturers, and brands doing wholesale at a scale where the ordering process is the bottleneck. Usually there is an ERP involved, a sales team that still takes orders by phone or email, and a catalog with pricing that varies by customer.

The pattern we see most often is a business that has outgrown a manual process. Orders arrive by email, someone rekeys them into the ERP, and pricing errors cost real money. The project is not really a website project. It is an operations project that happens to have a storefront attached.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Do I need BigCommerce B2B Edition, or will customer groups be enough?

It depends on whether you need company accounts with multiple buyers and roles. Customer groups plus price lists handle a lot of wholesale scenarios on their own, and plenty of brands run successfully without B2B Edition. If you need several buyers under one company with different permissions, approval workflows, or quoting built in, that is where B2B Edition earns its cost. We will tell you which you actually need during discovery.

Can BigCommerce handle customer-specific pricing at scale?

Yes, through price lists assigned to customer groups or companies, and that covers most requirements. Where it gets interesting is when pricing is calculated in your ERP based on contracts, volume commitments, or rules that do not map to a static list. In that case we integrate so the storefront asks the system of record rather than trying to mirror it, which is the pattern that holds up over time.

Can you connect BigCommerce to our ERP for real-time inventory and pricing?

Yes, and it is usually the core of the engagement. We have built integrations against NetSuite, SAP, Microsoft Business Central, and AS400. The scoping questions are how fresh the data has to be, whether the flow is one-way or bidirectional, and what should happen when the ERP is unavailable. Those answers drive the architecture more than the platform does.

Do you support punchout or procurement system integration?

Yes. If your customers order through a procurement platform and need a punchout catalog connection, that is custom integration work we can scope. It is common in manufacturing and distribution, and it is worth raising early because it affects the architecture.

We sell B2B and direct-to-consumer. Can one BigCommerce store do both?

Usually yes, using customer groups and gated catalogs to separate the experiences, and BigCommerce's multi-storefront capability if the two need genuinely different branding or domains. The right structure depends on how much the catalogs and pricing overlap. It is worth deciding deliberately up front, because retrofitting the separation later is painful.

How long does a B2B build take?

A straightforward wholesale storefront on a clean catalog is typically 10 to 16 weeks. Add an ERP integration, custom pricing logic, or punchout and it commonly runs 20 to 30 weeks. The variable is almost never the storefront. It is how clean your data is and how quickly decisions get made on the integration.

Are you a certified BigCommerce partner?

Yes. We are a BigCommerce BigDev Certified Partner, which is the technical development certification rather than a directory listing. We are also a certified Shopify Plus Partner. We hold both because we genuinely build on both platforms and we would rather give clients a real recommendation than sell whichever one we are locked into.
