Starting point

Where you're migrating from.

The platform you are leaving determines most of the difficulty. Here is what each one actually involves.

Magento / Adobe Commerce

The hardest and most common one. Magento's EAV data model has to be flattened into BigCommerce's flatter product structure, and years of custom modules need mapping to native features, apps, or rebuilt logic.

Shopify

Data moves cleanly. The work is in rebuilding the theme in Stencil, replacing apps with BigCommerce equivalents or custom builds, and re-establishing integrations.

Volusion / hosted legacy

Usually straightforward data, messy URLs. The redirect map is the make-or-break deliverable because these platforms tend to have unusual URL structures.

WooCommerce

Product and customer data exports cleanly enough. The challenge is untangling what WordPress plugins were doing and deciding what genuinely needs rebuilding.

Homegrown / custom

No export tooling, so we work from the database directly. Discovery matters more here than anywhere else because there is no documentation of what the system actually does.

Multi-store estates

Several storefronts, shared catalog, different pricing or currencies. BigCommerce's multi-storefront support is a genuine advantage here and worth planning around from the start.

Scope

What a real migration covers.

Data. Products with variants and custom fields, customers with their order history intact, orders, and content. Customers should not have to rebuild their account or lose their purchase record.

SEO. A complete 301 redirect map from every old URL to its new equivalent, metadata carried across, structured data rebuilt, and a crawl plan for launch week. This is the single most common place a migration destroys value, and it is entirely preventable.

Storefront. A Stencil theme built for the new platform rather than a visual copy of the old one. Replatforming is the cheapest opportunity you will ever get to fix the UX problems you have been living with.

Integrations. ERP, WMS, tax, shipping, marketing, and analytics reconnected and tested against real data before launch, not after.

Launch. A staged cutover with a rollback plan, monitoring on checkout from minute one, and someone actually watching the numbers for the first week.

Honest advice

Should you actually move to BigCommerce?

Sometimes the answer is no, and you should hear that before you spend the money rather than after.

BigCommerce tends to be the right call for three concrete reasons. First, cost: Shopify takes a percentage of every sale on non-Shopify-Payments transactions and BigCommerce does not, which at real volume can fund the migration by itself. Second, checkout: BigCommerce's Open Checkout can be rewritten completely rather than customized within what an app permits. Third, control: if you need to run your own payment and checkout process, BigCommerce accommodates it, which is exactly why PayJoy moved there with its own financing flow. Strong native B2B and multi-storefront without an enterprise upsell are real advantages on top of those.

It tends to be the wrong call when your team is small and wants the largest possible app ecosystem to solve problems without developers, or when your requirements are mostly direct-to-consumer and you would be better served by the platform with the deeper partner and app market. In those cases we will point you toward Shopify, and we have a BigCommerce to Shopify page for people going the other direction.

We run migrations both ways, so the recommendation is not a sales position. The worst outcome for us is replatforming a brand onto the wrong system and being the agency that has to explain it a year later.

Proof

PayJoy: replatformed to BigCommerce Enterprise.

We moved PayJoy onto BigCommerce Enterprise with a custom checkout, a financing API integration, and Cubbo fulfillment wired into the order flow. Checkout velocity improved 40%.

It is a fair picture of the work we do on BigCommerce: the platform handles the commerce fundamentals, and the hard part is the custom checkout logic and the systems it has to talk to.

Timeline

How long it takes.

A standard migration with a clean catalog and a handful of integrations typically runs 12 to 20 weeks from kickoff to launch. Magento and Adobe Commerce estates with custom modules, heavy B2B requirements, or an ERP in the middle commonly run 20 to 36 weeks.

The variable is almost never the storefront build. It is data quality, integration complexity, and how fast decisions get made. Migrations that slip usually slip because nobody documented the requirements before development started.

Why BigCommerce

Real reasons to choose BigCommerce over Shopify.

We build on both platforms, so this is not a pitch. These are the arguments that actually hold up when we scope a project.

01

No percentage of every sale.

Shopify takes a cut of transactions unless you use Shopify Payments, and that cost scales with your revenue forever. BigCommerce does not charge transaction fees on top of your gateway. At meaningful volume this is not a rounding error, and for some brands it is the entire business case on its own.

02

A checkout you can actually rewrite.

BigCommerce's Open Checkout can be customized completely, not adjusted within the boundaries an app or a script allows. If your conversion strategy depends on a checkout that does something unusual, that difference decides the platform.

03

Bring your own payment and checkout process.

Some businesses have to own the payment flow, whether that is proprietary financing, an unusual settlement model, or a regulated process. BigCommerce accommodates that. It is precisely why PayJoy runs on BigCommerce Enterprise with its own financing integration wired into checkout.

Add to that strong native B2B, multi-storefront without an enterprise upsell, and an open API surface, and there is a clear profile of company that belongs on BigCommerce. If yours is one of them, we will say so. If it is not, we will say that too.

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Will we lose our search rankings when we migrate to BigCommerce?

Only if the migration is done carelessly. Ranking loss comes from broken URLs, not from changing platforms. Every old URL needs a 301 to its new equivalent, metadata has to carry across, and someone has to actually verify the redirect map before and after launch. Done properly, most brands see a brief dip during recrawl and recover within weeks. Done carelessly, you can lose a meaningful share of organic traffic permanently.

What does a BigCommerce migration cost?

The honest answer is that the storefront is rarely the expensive part. Cost is driven by how many systems have to be integrated, how clean your product data is, and how much custom logic exists on the current platform. A straightforward migration and a heavily integrated B2B replatform can differ by an order of magnitude. We scope from a requirements document and give you a range early rather than after weeks of discovery.

Can you migrate our order history and customer accounts?

Yes. Customers, their order history, and product data all migrate. Customers keep their purchase record rather than starting from an empty account. Passwords cannot be transferred between platforms for security reasons, so customers activate their account on first login, which is standard for any replatform and worth planning a communication around.

How long will our store be down during the switch?

There is no extended downtime. We build and test on the new platform in parallel while your current store keeps selling, then cut over by pointing DNS once everything has been verified. The cutover window is minutes, not days. What matters more is the week after launch, when someone should be watching checkout and search console closely.

We are on Magento 1 or Magento 2. Is that harder?

Magento is the most involved source platform, mostly because of its EAV data model. Product attributes live across separate tables and have to be flattened into BigCommerce's structure, which is a systematic mapping exercise rather than a simple export. Years of custom modules also need auditing so you carry forward what earns its keep instead of recreating workarounds you no longer need.

Can you migrate us the other way, from BigCommerce to Shopify?

Yes, and we do that regularly. We are not trying to talk anyone into a particular platform. If you are on BigCommerce and Shopify is the better fit for where you are headed, that is a project we run often and we have a dedicated page for it.

Are you a certified BigCommerce partner?

Yes. We are a BigCommerce BigDev Certified Partner, which is the technical development certification rather than a directory listing. We are also a certified Shopify Plus Partner. We hold both because we genuinely build on both platforms and we would rather give clients a real recommendation than sell whichever one we are locked into.
